The UN and Universal Human Rights

by Melvin Olontha » 19 Apr 2009 21:38 UTC

I decided to just reopen a thread about this issue. I have to insist that it is not old or out of date but rather in the center of the contemporary struggle for the implementation of Universal Human Rights. In the center of the current controversy is the so called "UN racism conference" or "Durban II" in Geneva.

Geneva, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has repeatedly referred to the Holocaust a "myth" and called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" is scheduled to deliver a speech on the opening day, which also happens to be Holocaust Remembrance Day.

On Sunday, Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen said he would not attend over concerns that some countries would misuse the UN meeting to put religion above human rights. A statement by the minister said, "Some countries that still have a long way to go in in the human rights domain are misusing the summit to put religion above people's rights and to unnecessarily restrict freedom of speech". The statement continued, "The conference is too important to be abused for political ends and attacks on the West." Mr Verhagen described the final conference document as, "unacceptable" and, "a missed chance" to fight racism and discrimination.

So AEGEE, what's your opinion?

My favourite TV broadcaster, the European culture channel ARTE was present in Geneva and made this report (55min), acknowledging most of the problems (Sharia discrimination vs. Universal Human Rights, abuse of the UN Human Rights Council by dictatorships and the OIC etc.) but also criticising the US for losing the argument thanks to "Guantanamo".

You can watch it in German or French only this week, not in English yet, I'll post it here as soon as I find it.
