The University&#8217;s origins can be traced back as far as 1967, with the establishment in the city of a technical college, which became the Elazig State Academy of Engineering and Architecture (EDMMA) in 1969. Firat University was founded in 1975 as a second higher education council in the city. Nowadays, the university has 12 faculties, 14 vocational schools and 3 institutes. Beside the main campus Firat University serves higher education at neighbour cities (Mus, Bingol, Tunceli, Kemaliye\/ Erzincan) where some of the faculties and vocational schools are located. In 2010 Firat University (FU) has over 20000 students.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_96fXr_yXeV0\/TAVCC3ppidI\/AAAAAAAAAsE\/MwfHDUgb1MI\/s1600\/elazig-karisik-500-500-1.jpg\"><img style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_96fXr_yXeV0\/TAVCC3ppidI\/AAAAAAAAAsE\/MwfHDUgb1MI\/s200\/elazig-karisik-500-500-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5477857138831886802\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutturkey.com\/elazig.htm\">Elazig<\/a><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elazig is the most orderly city of the Eastern Anatolian region, due to its being recently founded with the name of Mamurat\u00fcl Aziz in the 19th century by sultan Abd\u00fclaziz to settle some over-population from Harput town. But it&#8217;s known that the city has a much older history dating back to ancient civilizations of Anatolia; Hurris, Hittites, Urartus, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans. It is situated on a plain near a mountain on 1,020 meters above the sea level and is surrounded by vineyards and gardens. The city today is also a trading center for crops and livestock.
