“I have enjoyed working with Locals in the finishing term and would love to continue the work! It means exchanging ideas, meeting fantastic people and organising events – everything that makes my days.” ~ Maria Magdalena Szczerbowska

Exciting news! Agora Novi-Sad is kicking off next week! But before you dive into the fantastic experiences awaiting you there, let’s introduce you to Maria Magdalena Szczerbowska from AEGEE-Kraków. She is running to become a member of NetCom and has already a vast amount of experience in AEGEE matters on the European level!

Hello. Before the start of the interview, introduce yourself and tell us who you are and what connects you to our organisation?

Hi there! Name’s Maria. I come from AEGEE-Kraków and belong to 4 European Bodies: Strategy Committee (for over a year now), Network Commission and Eco-Responsible Society Working Group (almost a year) as well as the just created Memes Interest Group. Pleasure to meet you all!

Special thanks to the Strategy Committee, Job Velthuis and Andrea Lombardi

What made you decide to run for this position?

Well, my reason will be quite simple: I have enjoyed working with Locals in the finishing term and would love to continue the work!  It means exchanging ideas, meeting fantastic people and organising events – everything that makes my days.

What do you think are the main challenges of Aegee networks at this stage, and if you were elected, what will you change?

During my term, I have had to realise how differently everyone understands what “a perfect Local” is. We have Antenna Criteria that make us live up to certain standards and for some create additional pressure. There are members that are more into the social or thematic parts of AEGEE (and some try to strike a balance between them, like me!). I want to further explore these differences in our organisation and help others develop sustainable models for their Locals, while learning on my own.

Network Commission is arguably one of the most prestigious positions in the entire organisation. However, being Network Commissioner is highly challenging. What motivated you to submit your candidature and why do you think you are suitable for it?

Well, I have already held the position as an Interim Network Commissioner and for me, it does not feel challenging. Rather, exciting. I meet new people and get to know them, their perspectives and experiences. It is something… just amazing, I adore it!!!

And I do not follow the logic of “being suitable” in life, it is more about whether one feels passionate about a matter. If yes, just follow the gut! And sure, I could [challenge people] with all [my] experience in managing the position, social media posting, events preparation, legal work, ethics… Just, it is not my approach, not fun for me :b

Do you have a preferred Network Area? What would you do if you’re appointed to another?

Definitely having no preferences; I am super open to all the experiences on my way, no matter how they are. It is always a chance to learn a new thing-and that gives me even more energy to perform! One important factor, though, is characters’ compatibility, or at least a mutual respect. Otherwise, even the best NetCommie will not be able to support the best Local.
